Homeschool

OPl is happy to welcome our community's homeschoolers. Between providing educational resources; providing friendly spaces to read, share, teach, and learn; and encouraging a connection to others who are in the same boat as you, we are happy to serve all of you.

Newsela is a free resource designed to increase literacy in K-12 students through the use of real-world news articles  from major publications. With Newsela, teachers/parents could allow students to choose the articles they want to read.  Newsela then tracks what the students read and their quiz scores. Additionally, the free version of Newsela gives access to articles at varying Lexile levels. So hypothetically, educators could assign the same article to students at a 620 Lexile, a 900 Lexile,  or an 1170 Lexile.

How it works:
After registering with the site, educators can create subject-specific binders and select from Newsela’s provided quizzes.  Students are then provided with access codes, so they won't need to provide email addresses to participate.  Parents can do the same for their own children, whether as part of a curriculum or to encourage free reading of popular topics.
