How Do I Become a Library volunteer?

OPL values the contributions made by our fantastic volunteers! Volunteers help the library shelve materials, plan programs, prepare for programs or events, and assist patrons. The staff not only appreciates the help provided by the volunteers, but also loves getting to know the volunteers as individuals. The talents and personalities of our volunteers enrich library programs and services.

What can I expect as a volunteer?

OPL has many volunteer opportunities, both in the Children's Department and in the Adult Department. You must be at least 14 years old to volunteer in the Children's Department. Volunteers over 18 are welcomed into the Adult Department. All volunteers must go through a Volunteer Orientation prior to working in OPL. The Orientation lasts around 30 minutes, and covers general expectations for all volunteers. Please feel free to ask questions and let us know what makes you unique! Volunteer roles often vary greatly, but typically a volunteer may do some or all of the following:
  • Put books in order on the shelving cart
  • Shelve books
  • Prepare materials for events/programs
    • cutting materials for crafts
    • assembling event materials
  • Assist patrons find items on the shelves
  • Assist patrons while participating in an activity/event/program
  • Clean up after an event
